Mets pack it in; is Willie safe?

October
1

Went to Shea today for one of the dumbest days in sports—breakup day. This is when 50 or 60 media members stand around the clubhouse all day long waiting to see what players might stop in to pack up their stuff. Things get so desperate at times that a guy like Damian Easley—good guy—who didn’t even play down the stretch was interviewed by a huge throng of reporters for 25 minutes!

And photographers from umpteen outlets, in this digital age, literally snap hundreds of pictures EACH of Carlos Delgado packing his stuff into a box. It’s embarrassing.

Then there is a little bit of news. Omar Minaya finally came down from his office to address us, and twisted himself into a pretzel trying to explain how he thinks Willie Randolph did a good job and that his “body of work” has been good and that he will tell the owners that. And Minaya insisted he has total autonomy over baseball decisions, as he did when he was hired, and when he hired Randolph. And yet Minaya could not say that Randolph will be back, not until he meets with the owners.

Could it be that Minaya really does want Willie back, but he’s afraid to say so because there’s a chance the owners will tell him to fire Randolph?

Could be. Anyway, I wrote a column for The Journal News and LoHud.com tomorrow that, in my opinion, Willie will and should be back.

Any thoughts?
